In 1915, when the country was suffering under the British rule, a party was built around the weekly paper “Gadar” ,to stir up the rebellions, this outreach not only inspired Indians to embroil together for freedom struggle but also to reach the ignorant mass.
From that day to the day now, the power of ink is diluted as the 17 paged newspaper has turned into an advertisement hoarding. The entire newspaper has turned into the page 3, it talks about link ups, break us and birthday parties. All glamour and glitz thoroughly covered whereas the part of city subdued in darkness is left as it is.
Now, if we turn to the idiot box, a noisy reporter, repetitive content and the flashy headlines is all we get. Overhyping and aggressive coverage is the new face of Indian media, where every news is surprisingly breaking, be it a smoking monkey or a dog who thinks he is a cat. Neglecting the death of farmers over Indrani Mukherjee’s jail routine. From a 52 Hr. coverage of a kid in a bore well to women fighting to worship in Shani Shrignapur Mandir, fake statistics, cooked up proofs, doctored video tapes, distracting news with hilarious headlines is a proof of the dying integrity and a huge insult to nation’s journalism.
There are numerous instances where media has acted irresponsibly. In sensitive situations like 26/11 the 2008 Taj attacks, Media singlehandedly managed to put Nation’s security in jeopardy, by giving information to the terrorist on all possible routes from where NSG commanders could enter. They realized it when the Chief of Navy bursted at them on such a blunder.
Now a days, E-Media is extremely influential as it targets both educated and non-educated members of the society, feeding gullible Indian minds with incomplete and biased information. Money and stringent competition are the key drivers putting journalism ethics, professionalism and responsibility at stake. Media’s primary purpose is to hold power to account which has been perfectly inverted. Columnists and bloggers are employed as the enforcers of corporate power, denouncing people who criticize its interests, stamping on new ideas, bullying the powerless. Journalism is on Sale!!!!
As Gandhiji said "A free press should be neither an ally nor adversary... but a constructive critic. It’s a bridge between the ruler and the ruled for transport of information inputs".
The only way a nation’s Media can work in its best interests is if it’s accurate, unbiased and accountable to its readers as it is to the proprietors otherwise it will just be a pompous show.
